378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nLet’s face it, everyone one of us has wanted to make a Magic card. We’ve all thought that there was some aspect of the game that would be improved by a contribution of our imagination. I think that a one drop red instant that goes through all opponent’s decks and exiles every blue card is a great idea, and perfectly balanced too. Ninety percent of the time the thing would just be eating a Force of Will anyway.

However, where I can only fantasize (it would be called “Eric’s Obscene Gesture” and it would be a fifty cent uncommon), other people actually get to live the dream.

A recent batch of M15 cards have been spoiled that were all designed by celebrity players. Now, none of these guys are as petty or vindictive as I am, so it’s unlikely that they designed cards just so they could use them to fill a niche slot in their EDH decks. Right?

WRONG! I well spend this article looking at these celebrity cards, and then baselessly accusing their designers of playing favourites for specific commanders. Because if the internet is good for one thing, it’s people loudly screaming opinions that have no basis in fact. Read the rest of this entry »

378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nI come to you folks today with a tale of failure. I tried, I tried so very, very hard.

But Shattergang Brothers fell right on its face.

failure

“Put the stamp on that deck, make it official.”

I wanted to power down my previous Jund deck (the beloved and often mentioned Prossh) and make a deck where every card I would draw was exciting to play. It turns out that I succeeded too well at the first goal and not well enough at the second.

So today’s article is going to be about the glaring places where I went wrong, and the crossroads that I’m standing at in terms of how I’m going to fix it.

378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nSo you folks will be getting no article from me this week. But don’t panic, I’m not leaving you high and dry. Instead, I am fulfilling a promise I made a long time ago.

Yes, I have finally gotten my full Prossh Deck list recorded and put up on Youtube, thanks to CMDRDecks!

Check out the deck here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZS9LtYyYug&list=UUuKRPsZAAB1allnQnkCmDtw

And if you’re still in the mood for some reading, why not check out the article that got posted on the mothership featuring Rivals’ Duel’s biggest fan, the amazingly flavourful Jud! You can check that out here, and support a guy who never gets enough appreciation for what he does for this site: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/sf/301

See you guys next week on Rivals’ Duel!

378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nIf you’ve been paying close attention to my articles and podcast appearances over the last several weeks, then you’re already aware that I’ve been helping my friend build his first ever, from-scratch EDH deck. After acquiring a metric f#%^load of trade fodder from me and a quick trip to the local gaming store, he was finally able to whip up a Erebos deck (see what I did there?).

In order to give his new Erebos deck a good test, I headed over to his place with my Prossh deck, along with something else I had quickly slapped together in order for his buddy to be able play a few multiplayer games with us.

I should have known better. You don’t bring a Norin the Wary deck to a table unless all bets are off and you’re ready to throw all reason and sense out the window.

What follows play-by-play of how a god and dragon had to desperately scramble to stop a coward from curb stomping them both.

I make running and hiding look goooooood.

378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nSo you bought a precon. And why wouldn’t you? You got some cool generals and there was a lot of value in that box, that’s a pretty smart purchase.

But if you want to be able to build more decks, or different decks, then you’re going to need a larger pool of cards. You’re going to need a solid EDH collection. This is going to take a slow and measured effort, spread out over the course of many months or even years.

Or, instead of that boring crap, we can take the Bonvie approach: quick and dirty. Emphasis on the dirty.

What did you think I meant?

I hope you weren’t wearing your whites.

378127_10150441621792624_1477312954_nCommandercast’s season break is coming up. And even though I will still be doing Rivals’ Duel with Nole during the break, I will have some time off where I wont be putting up bi-weekly articles about commander. In the spirit of the vacation, I will be suggesting some things that you can do if you also feel like taking a break from commander!

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Break from commander! That’s the funniest joke I’ve made all season! People have kicked drug habits easier than giving up this game.

But sometimes you are forced to take a break for a few minutes. These are the unfortunate gaps that happen between commander games where a couple people have died but the game hasn’t yet finished. What I am actually suggesting today are a handful of games you can bring around your weekend edh-athons, so you have something to do to burn time between these games and avoid getting all Magic-ed out.
