CommanderCast Episode 304

Posted: Monday, Dec. 25, 2017

Guest: Steve

Keep up with the conversation on Facebook & Twitter.

Discussing Steve’s blog, Commanderruminations, his outstanding collection of mashup Magic art, and how he became a Commander content creator.

Designing and implementing an EDH league

Worth reading: Steve’s amazingly comprehensive guide.

Ten discussion points on what NOT to do when setting up a point system.

DO NOT let your point system…

  • …be unnecessarily complicated.
  • …come across as being random.
  • …include unrealistic categories.
  • …intrude upon game play.
  • …rule out certain strategies.
  • …effectively ban cards.
  • …encourage bad behavior.
  • …turn the game into something other than EDH.
  • …easily provide ways for players to collude.
  • …result in more bookkeeping than you can handle.

Discussion on “Gen Points” – what are they & why should you use them?

Three things about Gen Points:

  • …You can’t control how/why players will give Gen Points.
  • …They need to matter, but matter less than winning & losing.
  • …You can/should try to push players to use them in specific ways.

Discussion on the impact of prize support & pay-in on EDH League play.

Cards and strategies to best farm points

Steve – Tana, the Bloodsower (goes wide, goes tall)

Adam – Maze of Ith, Sylvan Library

Mark – …has nothing to add to this list.  Again.

A couple of updates in the URLs for you guys.

The 2017 Commanderruminations Art can be found at

My old blog site is still at the link listed above

but I’m posting my Commanderruminations articles here now:

or you can just go to My work there is posted every Monday. My old site now has anecdotes and tales from the games I play every week.

Thanks again for having me on. It was a fantastic and humbling experience. I’d be thrilled to help out behind the scenes or join you again any time in the future. You will always be my first and favorite EDH podcast!

An excellent show. Thank you for sharing. I took part in a league where there was 5$ buy in per week, generally going for a mix of prizes end of the season, but with general FNM promotion foils throughout.

I definitely preferred a point system for rewarding big plays in EDH. Though did worry that some decks, like my combo deck, which was already getting major points for winning, was also point harvesting.

On the flip side among the big points reward we had in our list was COMBO Breaker! For stopping a combo in progress.

    • Adam Traas

Thanks again. Great having you on.

While I don’t have access right now to a Commander league due to a small play group, I do appreciate mixing the classical artworks with Magic cards. Those are pretty great.

Thanks! It’s entirely possible my writing is just an excuse to make and post the artwork ever week, though hopefully some of my articles are a decent read. I haven’t made any of them into a mat yet, but I mean to at some point… just not sure which one yet.

    i’m so excited with this…
