This entry is part 3 of 8 in the series Guest Article

By CASSIDY aka WRITEROFWRONG
Greetings, CommanderCast audience! This is Cassidy Silver, bringing another article for your sensory delight. Now, article may actually be the wrong word for what I will present in just a few short paragraphs; really, all I am going to do is present the collected words of respected EDH gurus, (and me as the ‘pity cc’ in the email chain).

It all began on November 8th, 2011, when I received an email from CommanderCast’s Andy. This by itself is not that unusual – we frequently email about all sorts of shit – but this email was a little different. It was entitled: ‘Calling All Certified Beasts’, and it wasn’t just addressed to me.

Andy commandercast@gmail.com 11/8/11

Hey guys. First of all, I actually do have your e-mails in a list thingy titled ‘Certified Deckbuilding Beasts’. Deal with it

Second, I was hoping you guys could give this deck a look.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YacugRgevyrmX6RO1CakqIhI7bw2HDopAiEUUzOgaUs/edit?hl=en_US

Not mine, but it was sent in to me by somebody making a donation to Gifts Given and they asked if could take a look at it for them. I don’t know how many times I’ve told people not to do this but they insist anyway. Typically I pass these emails along to somebody else if I think they want serious advice instead of Andy advice. I was hoping we could see some kind of collabo work on this one? I don’t want to waste your collective time (times? tymez?), but I would like this deck to be sterling. If you have ideas, discuss them in the Google doc using the comment system (ctrl+alt+M to add comment over highlighted text).

This deck belongs to a member of the CommanderCast audience named Trevor. I talk about him on this week’s podcast but in summary, he was diagnosed with cancer at 12 and since cancer is the worst, he’s still under constant observation even though it’s currently in remission after basically four years of therapies. Basically, he is the reason I bothered with the charity drive. I didn’t want to hand him two scoops of steaming shit for advice on how to max out the deck’s potential so I’m referring to y’all. I asked him if there were any restrictions, themes, etc. that he wanted to keep emphasized and got the following:

“The deck’s main focus is +1 +1 counters and some -1 -1 counter manipulation. The only cards I’m looking to avoid are mostly the cards that are over $50 like Mana drain FoW ect. Other then that the deck is mainly to cater to my love of counters.”

I am trusting you can do a better job of this on as individuals than I could manage, but I’ll admit this is also partly curiosity on my part to see whether having six of you in the lab at once ends up producing some kind of superbeast. I appreciate any interest you guys show in this project.”

Neale Talbot was the first to reply:

Neale Talbot neale.talbot@gmail.com 11/8/11
When you’ve got four sons it’s a BIT FUCKING HARD TO SAY NO TO THE KID
WITH CANCER.

Nice deck. He’s not mucking around either. I’ll put my thinking cap on.”

At this point, I hadn’t checked my email yet, or I would have responded right away. The great one himself, Carlos, beat me to the punch (and did a much better job).

carlos gutierrez cag5383@gmail.com 11/8/11
This deck is pretty sweet to start with. Most of the cards I was looking at playing are already in the deck. The first thing that jumps out at me is a lack of ramp and a low land count. These are cards I’d be looking to add, beyond the ramp and additional basics.

Glen Elendra Archmage
Melira
River Kelpie
Viral Drake
Primeval Titan

Winding Canyons
Vesuva
Mosswort Bridge

Orochi Sustainer probably leads to some sweet combos. Elvish Aberration, Orochi Sustainer, and Leech Bonder/Vigean Graftmage is infinite mana, at least.

The cards I’d start looking to cut, unless they have some kind of amusement value that I don’t see:

simic signet
Phantom Centaur
Phantom Nantuko
Spiny Starfish
Aquastrand Spider
Birds of Paradise
Quest for the Gemblades
Plaxmanta

Are there any other sweet persist creatures besides Woodfall Primus, River Kelpie, and Glen Elendra Archmage? I’m not seeing a ton of -1/-1 counters, or ways to get them in these colors besides persist. I suppose you could persist back, then put the counters on something else, but you really need black to take advantage of them.

Melira is probably unnecessary, but gives you a way to combo off with persist guys if you add a repeatable sacrifice outlet. We could add combos like Grand Architect plus Pili-Pala. I don’t know what you can sink the mana into (Sphinx of Magosi?), or if Travis wants a combo-y deck, but that’s certainly a direction to take.”

Carlos made some great points, and in general gave the advice I would give – up the mana, and improve the card quality.

This is the point where I first jumped in.

Cassidy Silver csilver85@gmail.com 11/8/11

Yavimaya Hollow would be good too, besides the lands Carlos listed.

In fact, I think Carlos covered a lot of the best choices. Beyond that, Briarwood Paragon has always been a favorite for aggro counter deck.”

I was confused as to who the general was at first, so most of my response was irrelevant to the conversation at hand.

Good ol’ Sean Patchen commented next.

Sean Patchen swordstoplow@gmail.com 11/8/11

Looks like he has a few ways to untap creatures for a single blue. He should really find some ways to abuse that ability with Kraj to make infinite mana.

Argothain Elder
Bloomtender

Both of these cards are fine mana acceleration on their own that let Kraj Produce Infinite Mana.

If we are still looking for something to do with infinite mana, may I suggest Viral Drake? He is a really good proliferate card / mana dump. Also, having a side plan to win with infect doesn’t seem too terrible.

I am counting a really low number of mana acceleration cards in here. Kraj costs 6 and needs to be in play for at least a turn to be really effective.”

Sean echoed the thoughts on a need for better mana, but incorporated Kraj’s combo strength to make it infinite. Now, using infinite combos is something that is frowned upon sometimes, but I for one don’t really mind them as long as they move the game along, (or end it!)

carlos gutierrez cag5383@gmail.com 11/8/11

Does the deck need more haste then? Hall of the Bandit Lord and Swiftfoot Boots aren’t too hard to fit in, and would make that a little easier, plus the ramp spells.

But if we have two slots to work with plus some cards to cut, here’s what I’d be looking at:

Cut:
Simic Signet
Helium Squirter
Spiny Starfish
Horseshoe Crab
Scute Mob
Aquastrand Spider
Pemmin’s Aura
Quest for the Gemblades
Birds of Paradise
Contagion Clasp

For:
Kodama’s Reach
Cultivate
Explosive Vegetation
Eternal Witness
Pili-Pala
Thornling
Viral Drake
Sphinx of Magosi
Hall of the Bandit Lord
Mosswort Bridge
Winding Canyons
Primeval Titan
Glen Elendra Archmage
Bloomtender

This needs two more cuts. Probably Steady Progress and something else? But I think that gives you the best redundant copies of combo effects.”

Things were really starting to heat up, and we had some real nice tech flowing into this build.

Cassidy Silver csilver85@gmail.com 11/8/11

Well since Vig isn’t in here and he will make it easy to get the combo pieces, he should go in, and sean just suggested fauna shaman to me as well.

Also, a fan suggested Grim Poppet and Devoted Druid – he was talking about a Necrotic Ooze but I think Kraj actually does it better.

I kind of like Horseshoe crab in here, as it will untap Kraj, but I think the Primeval Hydra, scute mob, mycoloth and forgotten Ancients can go, as they have a counter theme but don’t really do anything with Kraj.”

I also mentioned an article Calvin had done recently on Kraj, but it never came up in the conversation.

carlos gutierrez cag5383@gmail.com 11/8/11

Only reason I suggested cutting the Crab was because Thornling took the slot. Does the same thing, but goes infinite with Elvish Aberration on his own :)”

Sean Patchen swordstoplow@gmail.com 11/8/11

Morphling and Simic Ragwurm both serve the exact same purpose as horseshoe crab and we don’t need 3 horseshoe crabs in this deck.

Have we already talked about removing Phantom Centaur? Kraj doesn’t get his ability, so he is a waste of a slot.”

Carlos and Sean both don’t like the Crab so out he goes. The Phantom Centaur, though?

carlos gutierrez cag5383@gmail.com 11/8/11

Phantom guys and proliferating +1/+1 counters is sorta sweet, you have to admit :)”

Cassidy Silver csilver85@gmail.com 11/8/11

Yeah fair on the crab. Vigor seems to be a lot better than the phantom stuff. Id rather slot in tutor cards to get vigor/others.”

Neale got back to us the next day, after using that thinking cap. Any chance thinking cap is a type of mushroom?

Neale Talbot neale.talbot@gmail.com 11/9/11

Some thoughts:

Afiya Grove: An excellent card with Kraj, allows you to get counters out fast.

The old Melira/Woodfall Primus/Greater Good combo is a nice closeout,
has a nice counter interaction.

I want Draining Whelk in there, even if it’s a non-bo with Kraj.

Have we finally found a home for Jugan, the Rising Star? NO.

Scavenging Ooze seems like a no-brainer.

I’m interested in having Callous Oppressor + Barrin, Master Wizard to put counters on, especially if I’ve got infi mana. thanks to you guys adding Bloom Tender. Even Overtaker would be funny. Or Kamahl, Fist of Krosa.”

I loved Neale’s suggestions; he had a little bit of everything, and reminded me how horrible Jugan is.

The chain went quiet as the assembled titans of EDH intellectualism (and me) pondered the deck. In the mean time, Sean, Andy and Imshan had been commenting in the Google document, something we Knowledge Poolers do a lot.

This was added at the end of the doc –

Possible Additions
(Imshan’s Picks)
+Etched Oracle (this might be a stretch, I’m not sure how many times you’ll have 4 +1/+1 counters)
+Phyrexian Devourer (newly errataed; Kraj can exile the top card to get the +1/+1 counters without the death trigger now)
+Spincrusher (unblockable Kraj? Sure!)
+Scavenging Ooze (because it’s good).
+Decree of Savagery (because lots of +1/+1 counters are good)
+Mosswort Bridge (because it’s hot)
+a couple of more lands, even basics, or Terramorphic/Evolving.
+Kodama’s Reach/Cultivate
-Quest for the Gemblades (is disappointing)
-One of the untappers; too many
-Solemn Simulacrum (this guy is crummy in green)
-Leechbonder (this guy isn’t so hot)
-Deadwood Treefolk (meh)
-Shielding Plax (also meh)
(end Imshan’s Picks)

(Sean’s Picks)
+Skyshroud Claim/Cultivate/Kodama’s Reach (you all get what I am talking about)
+Bloom Tender
+Pila-Pala
+Argothian Elder
+Consecrated Sphinx (I don’t care how overplayed he is, it’s good)
+Primeval Titan (See Consecrated Sphinx)
+Devoted Druid & Grim Poppet (Druid-Pop is what Necrotic Ooze jams out too)
+Stripmine
+Creature Tutors (Momir Vig/Survival of the Fittest/Green Sun’s Zenith/ect. this deck has combo pieces that you will rarely stumble into)
+Swiftfoot Boots (Haste is good and you need to be able to target things)
-Storage Lands
-jace Beleran
-Steady Progress
-Quest for the Gemblades
-Shielding Plax
-Aquastrand Spider
-Mycoloth
-Scute Mob
-Krosan Restorer
-Horseshoe Crab
-Phantom Centuar
-Phantom Nantuko
(end Sean’s Picks for now)

These are thoughts I collected from the comments, which appear as speech balloons on the side of the doc.

Crystal Shard

Swordstoplow
11:55 AM Nov 8
Would we prefer a creature with a bounce ability to Crystal Shard? It seems like the preference would be to have something Kraj could copy to something he can’t.

CommanderCast
1:19 AM Nov 9
Temporal Adept or Vedalken Mastermind? Barrin? Heidar?

CSilver85
9:44 PM Nov 14
barrin goes well with control magic type spells, what about tradewind rider?

Creatures

ipoolar
5:46 PM Nov 8
There is some abusive potential here, such as Etched Oracle, Phyrexian Devourer (newly errataed), Spincrusher and Scavenging Ooze. The first three create silly scenarios, while the last one is just a good card and an amazing source of +1/+1s.

CSilver85
9:47 PM Nov 14
what about mindless automaton, kind of works like the oracle. its actually easier to get value out of faster, though oracle is a little bit stronger in the long run.

Indrik Stomphowler

CommanderCast
2:00 AM Nov 8
While this isn’t a bad card, given the presence of Proliferation, I think Wickerbough Elder would be better.

CSilver85
9:48 PM Nov 14
ooh that goes with the grim poppet/devoted druid combo too

Phantom Creatures

Swordstoplow
11:59 AM Nov 8
Cute tricks, but these can likely be removed for something with utility.

Elvish Aberration

CommanderCast
3:04 AM Nov 8
Replace with a Thornling. Neither card messed with counters and the Thornling has better activated abilities for Kraj

Swordstoplow
12:00 PM Nov 8
Elvish Aberration goes infinite with Pila-Pala.

ipoolar
5:47 PM Nov 8
Aberration is also amazing with Gilder Bairn.

CSilver85
9:49 PM Nov 14
i think thornling is still pretty good for making kraj win, deserves a spot

Krosan Restorer

Swordstoplow
12:02 PM Nov 8
Argothian Elder’s ability is in between the threshold and non-threshold ability. Elder is more consistent and doesn’t require that you feed your graveyard.

Mossbridge Troll

CommanderCast
3:02 AM Nov 8
I’m not too sure about this guy. He’s hilarious, but doesn’t use counters, and he doesn’t have a real high density of fatties to turn him into a murder machine.

CSilver85
9:51 PM Nov 14
yeah he was an easy cut

Mycoloth

Swordstoplow
12:10 PM Nov 8
I love mycoloth, so it makes me sad that it ends up being so bad. There are not a lot of creatures you want to sacrifice in this deck and even smaller amounts of token generation. Andy’s “favorite” Avenger of Zendikar is a depressingly obvious replacement.

CSilver85
9:52 PM Nov 14
good call on avenger. Yeah mycoloth is disapointing.

Scute Mob

CommanderCast
2:59 AM Nov 8
it produces a shit ton of counters, but they don’t move, and it has no abilities to copy with the kraj. Make this into a Viral Drake?

Aquastrand Spider

Swordstoplow
12:08 PM Nov 8
I think some graft is good, but not all. Giving Kraj reach isn’t very good. I think we are lacking the ability to tutor up combo pieces. I would be happy with Fauna Shaman here instead.

Shielding Plax

CommanderCast
3:05 AM Nov 8
maybe replace with Asceticism?

Swordstoplow
12:05 PM Nov 8
If the hexproof is important, then Swiftfoot boots seems like an obvious replacement here. It has the same mana investment and gives haste as well. That will be especially important with Kraj.

CSilver85
9:53 PM Nov 14
do we like the thousand year elixir better? or both

Quest of the Gemblades

ipoolar
5:48 PM Nov 8
This is pretty bad, IMO. It did remind me that Decree of Savagery would be unbelievably sweet here.

CSilver85
9:54 PM Nov 14
Is decree better than strength of the tajuru u think?

Steady Progress

CommanderCast
3:01 AM Nov 8
Replace with Greater Good? Sure it doesn’t do anything with counters, but this might not end up doing much either.

Jace Beleren

CommanderCast
1:55 AM Nov 8
I do not like Jace. He never produces true card advantage if there are more than three opponents, unless you just use him as a super-slow Concentrate. I would recommend Jace TMS, but he’s still expensive. Maybe M12 Garruk?

Swordstoplow
12:07 PM Nov 8
I think we need some real card advantage instead of Jace. Consecrated Sphinx comes to mind immediately. Consecrated Sphinx is also much easier to tutor up in these colors.

CSilver85
9:57 PM Nov 14
Do we like con sphinx better than magosi? magosi at least has kraj synergy.

Lands

CommanderCast
2:01 AM Nov 8
The lack of Strip Mines disturb me. Also, old storage lands use counters and interact well with proliferate. They are kind of poop but I don’t mind ’em. A little Mystifying Maze also never hurts.

Sean was commenting here on Imshan’s picks, specifically Kodama’s Reach and those types of cards.

Swordstoplow
6:09 PM Nov 8
I agree. Of course I generally run between 7-13 acceleration spells in my decks. That makes it roughly equivalent to 4-8 ramp spells in a 60 card deck.

A few days has passed, and Sean was the first to break the lull.

Sean Patchen swordstoplow@gmail.com 11/11/11

It’s been a few days since we all looked at this. Do we have enough to put a revised list together for this guy?”

Cassidy Silver csilver85@gmail.com 11/11/11

ill get to work on a decklist, should have it by tomorrow. Ill list what was cut and added.”

Andy commandercast@gmail.com 11/12/11

Hot fire. I’m also going to forward him this whole email thread so he has the ‘reference materials’.”

It took me a bit, but I managed to add everything together and create a 115 card list.

Ok, so this is the decklist with our suggestions factored in. We are at 115 cards so we need to cut 15, but I think it is looking pretty solid. There are a lot of different ways to do infinite combos, so maybe we can pick and choose.”

I posted everything above on the Knowledge Pool and let it simmer with the Poolers. I didn’t really leave all that much time, so Andy was the only one to check it out. Here are the comments he made regarding cuts, after snap-cutting Novijen Sages, Helium Squirter, and Birds of Paradise. For the record, Helium Squirter just makes me laugh.

Spincrusher

CommanderCast
12:06 PM 1/18/12
There’s already tons of ways to give kraj evasion and this is one of the worst, cut.

River Kelpie

CommanderCast
12:07 PM 1/18/12
Aside from a small group of persist guys this doesn’t look like its doing much, and the deck has good draw power already. Cut.

Orochi Leafcaller

CommanderCast
12:12 PM 1/18/12
I understand this enables combos, but this deck already has roughly one million combos and this is a card that does so little otherwise. Cut.

Etched Oracle

CommanderCast
12:14 PM 1/18/12
This is some weaksauce card draw with only two colours. again, it is good with some interactions, but so is everything on the list. Cut.

Plaguemaw Beast

CommanderCast
12:08 PM 1/18/12
This deck doesn’t make many tokens and the proliferate is slow, the body sucks, etc. Cut.

I then cut Gilded Lotus, Draining Whelk, Indrik Stomphowler, Phyrexian Devourer, Trygon Predator, Afiya Grove, and Barrin, Master Wizard, and voila!

Well, I hope you all enjoyed this little collaboration to build a strong EDH deck for a dude we all wanted to help out. It wasn’t my normal kind of article, but it was a joy to work on and present.

Thanks to Andy for giving me a place to put this piece (hehe) as well as contributing alongside Carlos, Sean Patchen, Imshan, and Neale.

You guys can keep up to date with all my stuff via my website www.youcanthandlethenath.com, and be sure to check out my newest project, the Off Color Cast, which is an EDH podcast I host alongside Christian aka Boel and Captain Red Zone himself, Calvin, at www.offcolorcast.com.
