This entry is part 7 of 8 in the series Wild Research

By PAT aka IRPOTENTIAL
In today’s installment of Wild Research, we will put the spotlight on one of my decks. This particular deck is one of my favorite experiments I have ever concocted. The deck was conceived in the midst of an arms race in one of my play groups. After the Commander product was released, many more people at my local game store started to play EDH. A month or so later, several people had decided EDH was not for them and given up, but everyone else started to tune and tweak their decks. Eventually an arms race ensued; cards like Myojin of Night’s Reach, Jin-Gitaxias, and Vorinclex became regular and recurring elements of our games and the meta game shifted to nearly all mid range control decks. The average game became a staring contest for 15 turns until someone dared to try to oppress the rest of the table. I quickly got bored and frustrated playing these games.

My first solution was to try the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em approach”. I tuned my decks to play a less interactive game of hand sculpting and two card combos. I was still dedicated to the idea I should be winning my fair share of the time. In short, this solution failed miserably. If anything, I hated playing more than I did before. I thought some more about the games, how they played out, and what I did not like about them. First I did not like the staring contest to 15 mana. Many of the decks were sculpting their perfect hand and waiting until they had enough mana to play out their whole win condition in one turn and have mana to protect it. More or less everyone was ignoring the early and mid game and waiting for the late game. I had already experimented a little bit with being an early aggressor, but this just focused the whole table on my demise. Second I hated feeling like I had to win all the time and getting frustrated when I could not. I am a very competitive person unless I deliberately focus on not winning. So I set out to build a deck that would only win by accident and launch the whole table from the early game to the late game as quickly as possible. Group hug naturally rose to the top of my good ideas list. Read the rest of this entry »

Real CommanderCast thugs will know all of these people on this episode. If you don’t then you’ve got some catching up to do with the back catalogue. It’s a special episode where I’ve collected three CommanderCast alumni from the program’s past (some more recent than others) to help me keep that hot fire burning in the worldwide EDH cipher. It was interesting and fun to get them together for a sort of cross-section of my stupid show’s history and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it. Jeremiah, Fred and Mike were all on the staff at different times but came together for this episode like they’d been podcasting together for years, and I feel this is one of the better shows I’ve ever produced. And trust me, it wasn’t on account of my oft-embarassing contributions of prepubescent squealing.

What’s on the ticket for this week? Well, as usual, the CommanderCast goons on the information superhighway hold me down with some solid topics to cover and my team in the real also helped out. The random nature of games, upcoming cards, a prepackaged segment, and the importance of revenge are all on the table for us to dissect until you get tired of listening (or the show ends, I guess).

Welcome back.Three weeks have passed and with it, I have been on a ‘vacation’ that consisted of shipping shirts and recording podcasts. The machine at CommanderCast Worldwide Headquarters is one that may never stop: truly, it rumbles forward at the cost of any number of lives, any measure of sanity. The noise-pollution belching, word spewing beast is insatiable and no amount of work can leave it satisfied. This week’s episode sends the forge of Community, Strategy and Technology back to full blast as I am joined by Sean, William and Pat to throw more fuel into the hot fire of the worldwide EDH cipher.

This is usually where I put in a lot of talk about practically nothing, but I was fortunate enough to have Sean drop this gem on me, captured during the recording.

Also, Season 8 Contest inspired by Ryan Sainio of The Sainio Cast! PEEP GAME on how to enter and win fabulous prizes! …well, at least one fabulous prize. The grand prize on this contest is really something special.

Thank God it’s over because I don’t have any time left. It’s time to end Season Seven with a classy guest, and somebody we’ve never heard from in the audio format before: Jud aka GU Doug aka GooDongs, the author of Journey to Nowhere and longtime CommanderCast booster. With GooDongs here to help us on the track, I bring in CommanderCast’s resident audio editing ninja Conor and the Voice of the Home Version, Christian “The Natural” “Buttdongs” “Ironballs” Renoe. With this four-man team we roll up a mixed bag of topics, light it up with our collective (admittedly dim) insight, and toke deeply. Get into the circle and pass this shit to your man on the left, because this is CommanderCast at it’s finest.

Also hold your breath because it’s gotta last for three weeks son! This is the end of the season. CommanderCast will return with the whole squad rolling extra-extra deep on November 26th get Season 8 poppin’ for your viewing/listening/reading pleasure. There’s some pretty niced-up stuff planned for that volley of material, including having my man Karston from TopAndGo Productions on deck to provide us with weekly Commander videos. Look forward to it… or don’t, and look like an asshole later.

See y’all in three weeks, stay true!

BONUS PODCAST POPPIN OFF FOR ALL MY PPLZ

Today’s feature is a special edition of CommanderCast where Andy is flying solo, backed only by an embarassing collection of mistakes made while recording, an extended track of ‘ums’ taken from a prior recording and the mailbag. Oh, and he gets some backup from Ryan of SainioCast (the self-titled podcast) who drops some jewels regarding the next step in the evolution of Horde Magic, Quest Magic. Also, as a heads up, this isn’t really the same as the prior DerpmanderCast incursion, because I don’t have three of my team’s most elite podcasters holding things down, so I apologize if you were expecting more of that glorious garbage. And if you hated the first DerpmanderCast, well… this is likely more up your alley.

Also, can’t forget the announcements of the winners of Gifts Given 2012’s Super Secret Mystery Prizes! I saved that bit for last so you have to dredge through the rest of the junk to get to it. Deal with it son.

…wait, I timestamped even THIS crap below! Well, maybe you can skip around to find what you want then. How beautiful is freedom!
