Hey all! Everyone enjoy Valentine’s Day? I know I sure did (doesn’t hurt when you have the best boyfriend ever), but since that was very much on my mind as I was editing, I included a little bonus segment at the end where I praise a little something for the people out there who aren’t as busy on v-day as they’d like to be.
As for today’s episode, we’re bringing Andrew Magrini back to talk about his Edric deck (with some support by Cory and Nick), introduce a new segment, handle the delicate hearts of newbies, and break a few rules regarding card discussion (HINT: it involves Gatecrash!).

Journey to Nowhere 15 – Five Years and Twenty Two Releases

As 2012 comes to a close it is hard as a writer in search of content to not look back at what the year had to offer. It seems like there has already been lots of talk on the flagship podcast about all the goodies that “Twenty-Doz” did or didn’t bestow on us. Regardless of what you thought of the sets Return to Ravnica, M13, Planechase 2012, Avacyn Restored, and Dark Ascension had to offer they definitely had their fair share of hits, role players, and maligned cards. I found plenty of cards to play in this years sets; some of which rank among my favorite cards printed, and some of which I hate just as much as any card ever printed
For me while Dark Ascension offered little in the form of cards for me to play it had two of my most favorite new cards in form of Requiem Angel and Jar of Eyeballs. They both fit perfectly into my favorite strategy of sacrificing creatures for profit by adding even more profit. Like most people I found a wealth of cards to play from Avacyn Restored, and was quick to spit piles of hate on everyone’s favorite easy button Deadeye Navigator. Planechase surprisingly had many fun new cards to offer, many of which I have obtained but have yet to build a deck for. I didn’t find a whole lot to work with in M13 but Trading Post is sure to become King of anyone’s durdlefest. Lastly in Return to Ravnica I wish I had found more cards to play but still found plenty. Journey to Nowhere 14 – Don’t Turn Around

If you have been crazy enough to endure trudging through most of my articles you probably know I usually march to the beat of my own melodica player (seriously who needs drums when there are breath powered keyboards around). I’ve made a lot of odd choices in my thematic decks like building them around a Rush song, a Coen Brother’s movie, old people, and things riding things but this time I may have officially stamped my hand insane. Deck restrictions and thematic deck talk has been well covered thus far on CommanderCast (like Here and Here to show a few) so I don’t think I really need to try and convince you why people build them, enjoy playing them, and are consistently coming up with new ones. I have been playing a lot of EDH on Magic Online, MTGO, lately and I’m constantly running into people who profess to be playing this theme deck or that theme deck, most recently a deck that only used promo cards. Journey to Nowhere 13 – I Made a Tokens…Now What?

Hi my name is Judson, AKA GUDoug, and I am a “Wildly Successful” token master. Any deck can make a token or two without blowing out an o-ring, especially when using perennial candidate for “greens best finisher” Avenger of Zendikar. So does playing that card make a deck a token deck? I don’t think anyone would jump to that conclusion…unless you are a registered token offender, then any token made suddenly classifies your deck a token deck. As a registered token offender you have to go door to door visiting each local game store in your area and let them know you abuse non-card permanents in-game. Unofficially I have assumed the mantle of CommanderCast’s token “Token Guy” (S7E13) and I have a statement that I would like everyone to know, “I don’t always play tokens but when I do you will know it.” Tokens often get the stink eye from other players, and are not viewed as a difficult strategy to play. Journey to Nowhere 12 – Corporate Responsibility, Personal Sacrifce, and the Greater Good: A Journey to Nowhere Tribute to Mightily Oats

Disclaimer: At the end of May 2012 CommanderCast was blitzkrieged by an all out assault that everyone involved in the podcast and website had never seen before. Within the span of three days on one especially burned out week the website was attacked in a dual strike by one Mike AKA ‘Mightily Oats,’ leaving a smoldering crater filled with market fresh entertainment, choice cuts of meaty cards, and Photoshopped delicacies, all steeped in two mind boggling articles good enough to steam your grandma’s undies. It was for all intents and purposes an unheralded double tap to the head the likes of which we will never see again. The series ‘Cooking With Oats’ showcased a new great talent to the CommanderCast lineup and punched everyone in the yambags with a innovative new spin on writing EDH articles (Click this to read the ‘Cooking With Oats’ back catalog). I remember reading the first ‘Cooking With Oats’ and basically realizing that this guy, whoever he was, was putting everything into his articles that I wanted to but had never found a way to do so. Mike’s articles were full of humor, bizarre non-EDH stories that tied into EDH decks at the end, and were all impeccably well written. Having done a fair amount of comedy writing in my college days, I had always wished for a way to include that more into articles but struggled to do, and this Mightily Oats just seemed to ooze everything that I wanted in my writing. Every other week I looked forward to seeing what unpredictably insane situation Oats would be in and how it would all tie up nicely with a big bow at the end. So with Mike’s permission and blessing I wrote an Oats-esque article and had a blast doing so. The experience was very liberating and actually one of the most effortless articles I have written. While I would never want to steal Mike’s style I really wanted to give his article archetype a try, so be prepared as this isn’t going to be anything close to your usual Judson AKA GUDoug article. I know that this probably won’t appeal to everyone but I encourage you to sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride. Read the rest of this entry »
