Colorless Staples

Hey there Commander players, Rhyno here charging at you with a new segment. In this segment I’m smackin’ down my top 3 staples in each color and in colorless. By staples I’m talkin’ about those cards that you should shuffle up in every deck regardless of what type of deck it is. First up to the plate is colorless, so here we go!

#3 – Sword of Feast and Famine

The overall strongest of the Swords for Commander, this battle blade brings you both mana advantage and card advantage simultaneously. Connecting with the Sword (easy, just attack Jarad) can give you two big main phases and take a card from that guy who blew up your Chromatic Lantern last turn. I’ll leave you with the thought of the Sword combined with double-strike, for a tasty Mind Rot on a stick.

#2 – Lightning Greaves

For a meager two colorless mana and a free equip cost, you get two of the all-around best abilities in haste and shroud. Having a pair of Greaves sitting on the battlefield early in the game is a great way to have your opponents wondering what’s coming next. And because board wipes are popular among Commander players, being able to make your mondo monsters fast will allow you to dish out an attack, or even get a when-this-attacks trigger, before a sorcery-speed board bomb like All is Dust blows up your beloved beast.

#1 – Sol Ring

One ring to rule them all… You can’t possibly go wrong with a 1-drop artifact that churns out a whoppin’ 2 colorless mana. This thing is a pump of nitrous straight to your deck. And heck, it even gives you Metalcraft players a small advantage. Damn it feels good to be a gangster (and cast a turn one Sol Ring).

Those are my picks for the top 3 colorless staple cards. What do you think? Am I off my rocker? Which staple colorless cards do you never leave home without?
