Strategy
25 years of M:tG strategy:
Tribal shenanigans
Why play tribal decks in EDH?
- When did tribal decks become thing?
- From MTG Wiki “Tribes” entry: “The concept has been around since Alpha, but was not explored in depth until Fallen Empires. The Onslaught block was the first to delve very deeply into the mechanics of the tribal theme.”
- What was the first competitive tribal deck?
- Rebels?
- How much support do you need in a tribe to make it viable?
- Worth reading: “The Trouble with Tribals,” by Gavin Verhey
- From Gavin’s article: “Generally, the way tribal decks work… is that they want to play a lot of creatures and then cards that make those creatures’ types matter. The weaker the individual creatures are, the better the tribal rewards need to be to get you to play them. The opposite is also true: the better the individual creatures are, the weaker the tribal rewards need to be to convince you to play a lot of them. (And, of course, the sweet spot is when you have very strong tribal rewards and very strong individual creatures!)”
