This entry is part 48 of 538 in the series CommanderCast

It’s still Crossover Month. Deal with it! This week’s podcast features a bunch of goons. As our non-podcast guest we have Dave aka Derfington, the artist behind Durdling Around; and JayBoosh and Scotty Mac from the Eh Team podcast spit fire into their mics for a show composed of cursing, grunting, and Magic-ing. The grunting is truly next level. Some of the conversation is pretty good too, if that’s what you’re here for; for this episode we spent a bit of time sippin’ Haterade before we started recording to go all-in on negativity, talking about Doucheology, Hated Out, and then what we consider the most played-out cards in Commander.

Gifts Given: It’s Still A Thing™. If you would like to send something in to be sold off at Child’s Play’s benefit later, then please check out this link and follow the instructions. The final date to do so is fast approaching.

Also, the call-in episode is approaching. My plan is to record on Wednesday, November 30th at approximately 8pm EST. If you want in, you need to e-mail me and let me know. The screening process is pretty vigorous (first-come, first-serve… with a few holdovers from last season), so brace yourself.

Show notes and pertinent links below. Enjoy.

00:00 to 02:50: Intro: Crossover week continues. Here’s who’s on the podcast and where they’re from.

15:43 to 23:05: Charity Cases: I speak on the contribution people have made to the charity drive and read their messages.

03:01 to 15:31: Doucheology: We head out into the wilds of Commander to advise you on dealing with the wide world of douchebags you might run into. It’s half-parody, half-confessional, half-bitch session, and 99% real talk… it’s Doucheology.

  • Marty McFly: Suggested by @cubemiser on Twitter, this is the guy who can’t stop gushing about how he WOULD have won the last game… you know, the one he just lost.
  • Bait and Switcher: Suggested by @a_magrini on Twitter, this Douche takes a loo at what everyone is playing, then calls an audible on his deck (like a prick).

23:18 to 43:49: League Play: We talked Leagues once before but mostly concerned our discussion with setting one up. Here, we talk about despite popular portrayal, League play is NOT necessarily for everyone. The implications of material prizes, various scoring structures, and metagame-warping setups are all on the tabe for this chat.

44:04 to 1:01:28: Hated Out: Graveyard Decks: Commander is a format where the importance of recursion is often parrotted by people, whether they understand why it’s good or not. But this isn’t recursion. These are graveyard decks, and if they haven’t bothered you at some point, you’re probably a repressed cyborg who will someday do something regrettable. To help you blow off steam, here we talk about why these decks are hated and appropriate steps you can take to control them.

  • S2E10: Guest Spot Recursion: We talk about attrition decks with heavy graveyard involvement in Strategy.
  • S3E6: Evil Deeds: We talk about leaning on your group with obnoxious strategies, and weaning people onto them for greater long-term acceptance.

1:17:27 to 1:30:23: Most Played Outest: Some cards are plenty good but happen to wear out their welcome. These cards have all fallen into that category in our minds. Sure, they’re good, but they’re maybe a little sickening at this point.
