This entry is part 51 of 538 in the series CommanderCast

Posted by ANDY aka GHoooSTS
In perhaps the most mentally exhausting season ever, where I prayed for a time dilation device but never got one, CommanderCast has taken some pretty sweet strides. Crossover Month? Check. Sick guests? We done did it. Gifts Given? All joking aside, that was actually super sweet. Essentially, we became spiritual millionaries, expanding our minds, opening our hearts, and WHOPPIN ASS WHEN PLAYING DEM CARDS. Truly, we have all been enlightened.

Gifts Given auctions are now happening. If you have money, you can spend it on these cards, and then enjoy them; the money you spend will be diverted to Child’s Play, a worthy cause if there ever was one. The auctions have been firing off and making monies in ways I honestly did not think would happen, and many bidders have been beyond generous with their funds that I understand are limited by the fact that the world economy is basically teetering on the knife’s edge, mostly tilting towards the ‘global ruin’ side. So I really thank you guys–donors and purchasers–for being so charitable when things are kinda hard all over.

Also Season 5 Contest! Make a new song for the Free-For-All Roundtable! You could win things, make ‘art’, and help the podcast out, which I consider a win for everyone involved.

In three weeks (hopefully) I will come back in a whirlwind of sound and fury, bringing back the realest talk that the internet has ever seen as it pertains to a small subset of a fantasy trading card game. Some things will change (the music); other things are, as always, the same (I will still have no idea what I’m doing when playing Magic). It will be comforting and refreshing at the same time… or horribly alien and grating. Only time will tell. But since you’re here reading this, you’ll hopefully at least come back to find out.

Show notes and pertinent links below. Enjoy.

00:00 to 08:30: Intro: Podcast introductions, who is talking to you, and thingies about the show all covered in the longest intro ever.

08:42 to 19:22: Free-For-All-Roundtable: The Roulette: Commander as a format has oversized singleton decks. Surely, the intent is to increase variance far beyond the threshhold of the typical 60×4 deck creation rules of constructed formats, but how important is this variance to us as players? Is the ‘roulette’ aspect part of the ‘spirit of Commander’, or is it another facet of the format (like broken fast mana or the availability of Necropotence unchecked) that is available and players can decide whether to use/abuse for themselves?

  • S3E6 with extensive discussion on mono-B and tutors

19:34 to 36:00: Alt. Format Discussion: Planechase: With the announcement of new Planechase joints coming down the pipe this seemed like a good time to delve into the world of Planechase as it pertains to Commander. How do two variant formats overlay? Does busting out planar decks add to the experience, and what are some different ways you can make use of those oversized cards?

36:13 to 38:00: Community Spotlight: One General To Rule Them All: I only discovered this website a month or two ago and it’s totally sweet. With varied articles ranging from humour to set reviews and even some stuff on the fascinating concept of Commander cubes, OGTRTA definitely deserves a bookmark form any discerning Commander player.

38:12 to 42:47: Charity Cases: I speak on the contribution people have made to the charity drive and read their messages.

43:03 to 1:03:41: Archetype Rundown: Toolbox: A toolbox deck is designed to solve any problem and give you the answers you need to threats, when you need them. These diverse decks tend to be tutor-heavy, with specific ‘silver bullet’ style cards enabling them to get out of all kinds of strange situations. They have been historically powerful, and in Commander, with tons of tutors, large decks, and singleton restriction, they change… but for the better or worse? How do you play one of these decks, and why would you bother? All this and more in another Archetype Rundown.

1:04:06 to 1:19:40: Derpin It Up: “Then this one time I FUCKED EVERYTHING UP”. This is kind of like those stories, except we’re aiming for a broader category of derps from which you can impart lessons from out inattention, literacy failures, cowardice, or other character faults that run deep within our very essences. What can I offer in defense of myself and my fellow podcasters? At the end of the day, we’re all just straight derps… but we’re learning to herp around less.

1:19:56 to 1:31:41: Curving Out: CMC 4: Spells that cost 4 mana. This is not complicated, though it’s been a while since we did it.

1:31:53 to 1:55:57: Super Secret Tech: Saving the best for last this season. We’re dipping back into the vaults and emerging with arms laden with riches… SECRET TECH RICHES. Now, you too can adorn your own piles of cardboard with the same cards and act like they’re better than they really are. Well, at least I like ’em.
