This entry is part 3 of 10 in the series One-Two Punch

By Dodo Bird Commander writer Ryan Zeitz

Hey everyone, Rhyno here charging at you with another installment of “One-Two Punch”, series where I show you 3 powerful card pairs, one 2-color guild at a time.

These are NOT combos in the traditional sense that they instantly K.O. (cuz that’s below the belt). Instead, they’re the jab and the uppercut you need to get back in the fight when your opponents have you cornered.

Black-white is Orzhov…Let’s go!

Move 1: Disciple of Griselbrand + Serra Avatar

First up for your playing pleasure is the life/death combination of Disciple of Griselbrand and Serra Avatar. Why mess around with Loxodon Warhammer when you can double your life in a single swoop?

This combo goes best in a black-white sacrifice deck alongside outlets like Ashnod’s Altar and Sadistic Hypnotist. Add a Dark Mikey to the mix (Mikaeus the Unhollowed) and you’re seriously in business–he’ll let you double your life total twice with Disciple/Avatar!

Move 1, black

Move 2: Triad of Fates + Ashen Rider

In this little dance, Ashen Rider’s fate is to be flickered out and in for maximum effect. Though it takes a few turns to pull off, Ashen Rider will soon give your opponents’ permanents their marching orders to the eternal abyss of exile.

Triad of Fates even makes a good commander where he’s blinking or exiling hard-hitters like Phyrexian Delver and Reveillark.

Move 2, black

Move 3: Souls of the Faultless + Gift of Immortality

We all know there are times where our life totals are dwindling low. At those times, an immortal health-boosting wall wards off additional attacks especially well. Like move 1, this nigh-indestructible duo can gain you a heap of life–and suck a heap from your opponent (just ask my friend Matt, who may have unwittingly attacked into this with a 60-power creature…)

Move 3, black

So there you have it! Three one-two punches you can try pulling on your friends in your black-white deck.

What are your favorite one-two punches in the land of Orzhov? Let me know in the comments section below.

  1. Great point on Triad and Ashen Rider. I always thought of Triad of Fates as sort of a alternative group hug general, and the Rider is so aggressive I never thought to put them together.

My Ghost Council of Orzhova deck uses the traditional sac ‘n recur cards to abuse Ashen Rider, Angel of Despair and the like, but using the Triad is a cool way of thinking about the card and it’s ETB effect.

  2. This really is genuinely applicable aspect as greater around the weblog. Like raving about somewhere around.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  7. Howdy! I just wish to give a huge thumbs up for the nice info you’ve got here on this post. I might be coming back to your blog for extra soon.

  8. Wilson was horrified. “At first, I thought they were actually advocating for people to throw plastic bottles into the ocean,” Wilson wrote in a 5 Gyres blog, partially entitled “#TheyJustDon’tGetIt.”
