This entry is part 87 of 538 in the series CommanderCast

The internet: a barren intellectual wasteland filled with trolls, crazies, and neckbeards. Or is it? This week on CommanderCasy, Andy tags Brian aka ISBPathfinder into the fray. Brian is a moderation on MTG Salvation’s EDH board, the largest and most active online Commander discussion community I’m aware of. Brian is responsible for keeping things in line as well as regulating the primer threads and so on. Justin and Will join the discussion as we talk about how to get the most out of online tools that let you interact with other Commander players.

We talk about some other stuff, too, but mostly this episode is like 40 minutes of Dark Ascension review. I still think the set was crap for Commander players, but that doesn’t mean we can’t drag out a segment on it! Tons of picks, pans, and so on. I also notice an unusual pattern in the artwork towards the end of the segment.

Important: Gifts Given 2012 payments are due in one week, so get them in now… FOR THE CHILDREN

Show notes and pertinent links below. Enjoy.

00:00 to 04:12: Introduction: It’s like radio, but on the internet

I did an image search for ‘internet forum’ and this came up. Deal with it

04:26 to 28:41: Getting The Most out of the Online Community: For a narrow subgenre of a nerdy cardgame, there’s a lot of discussion on EDH online. Actually… I guess it’s not surprising at all when you put it like that. Anyway, there’s a lot of resources out there and the foremost among them are other Commander players. How can you get the most out of those people when you want to get involved in communities like MTG Salvation? This week our man Brian can provide some extra insight into using the forum, but we also touch on the Facebook, Twitter Machine, and so on.

28:56 to 42:53: Guild Wars: In Ravnica: City of Guilds, we were introduced to ten two-colour combination guilds that were represented by a specific set of mechanics and flavour. Now that we’re going back, Will has devised a crazy alternative format he’s calling Guild Wars. He did an article about it last week, so you can peep that for the full rules; this week we discuss the concept.

43:08 to 1:01:41: Reasonable Expectations: Brian wanted to discuss the idea of what is reasonable to expect our of your card in terms of value. To get to the heart of the discussion, we go deep into the rabbit hole regarding value over time, immediate function vs more function over time, mana investment, and more. This is harder to explain in text than it is to talk about, so I guess you’re best off just listening to the segment.

1:01:58 to 1:45:00: Dark Ascension Set Review: Here it is: our comprehensive, hands-on, months-later review of Dark Ascension, just in time for Return to Ravnica! There’s a LOT covered here, so let’s just get into the breakdown:

1:45:16 to closing: Outtro: Thanks for listening!
