Remember this?

this banner is still awesome

I sure do!

This week, we do a sort of throwback episode–a retrospective and whatnot. I am joined by Byron for this episode as the two of us went back to the origin of this whole audioscape adventure. I looked over the notes of S1E1 and transformed them into the show you see today, where we take a look back on many of the same topics as we discussed two years ago with the benefit of hindsight, talk about the future, and shout out some of our brothers in content production too.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for a very special edition of CommanderCast, the biggest episode ever to kick off 2013!

Show notes and pertinent links below. Enjoy.

00:00 to 02:18: Introduction: It’s like we’re stuck in a time loop!

  • Content Archive: peruse CommanderCast’s past!
  • S1E1, where it all began (warning: pretty embarrassing to listen to now)

02:30 to 15:44: Free-For-All Roundtable: Is Commander More Or Less Standardized:  In our first show, myself and Byron discussed a lot in our first Community segment, but the heart of most of the discussion was the place of house rulings and the Rules Committee in trying to tame the wilds of EDH groups everywhere. With two years behind us now, we take a look at what has changed in this regard. Is EDH becoming more standardized as a format? Has the place of the RC changed in the average group?

15:58 to 22:13: Community Spotlight: Still Strong: Here are four websites that I’ve spoken on in past Community Spotlights. These sites are still going strong after more than a year, some two years plus. Some have also seen significant change since their inception, but they are all steadfast bros in the content production game and I want to shine a little bit more light on them than the first mention could. If you’re down with CommanderCast, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be down with all these guys too.

22:27 to 45:52: The Evolution of Commander Strategy: What has changed in the two years since CommanderCast came into being with EDH strategy? Since our first general discussion on how to win games of Commander, a lot of things have changed. The player base has gotten more connected, information is more available, and of course tons of new cards have been printed that can have an enormous impact on the format. In this segment we discuss the following points, from our perspective, on how the game has been changing.

  • The rise of green-based mana ramp as perhaps the most ubiquious strategy
  • Reduction of mana curves
  • Has green surpassed blue as the second-most powerful colour?
  • Red is now more commonly viewed as legitimately threatening
  • The move away from broad-function cards towards specific-purpose cards
  • Proactive play vs generic value-seeking
  • Decks tend to rely on Commanders less, unless they have very specific purposes
  • More unconventional strategies

46:08 to 1:05:53: Over//Under: Uril, the Miststalker VS Kaervek the Merciless: Another throwback to our not-so-secret origin, Byron has once again chosen a Commander who he feels is getting too much shine and one that is way under the radar despite being pretty sweet. This week we tear down one of the boogeymen of the format, Uril, the Miststalker, and help build with one of the coolest Commanders out there: Kaervek the Merciless. What’s changed that devalues Uril and helps build up Kaervek? How do these guys stack up in an ever-changing Commander environment, especially with the newest powercreepin’ cards that have been printed?

1:06:11 to 1:24:24: Secret Tech: From the first episode to today, Secret Tech has always been a favourite segment. After so much picking over the bones of Magic’s past, there’s not too many truly secretive cards left, but we do our best to dredge up some hot fire to slip into your sleeves and bludgeon your opponents with.

1:24:39 to END: Dat Outtro: Thanks for listening!
