Hello Commandercast Faithful, true believers, and everything right with the internet! This week, I’m trying out my hand putting in a sequencial transition. It’s a mystery wrapped in a burrito, wrapped in darkness. Can you figure out what we’re talking about in between segments (hint: It should be fairly obvious)?
Oh, and I guess we’re actually going to spend some time talking about Commander too, with the return of “Deck Archetype Rundown” and “The Entourage”.
As always, shownotes, links, and download link are below.

COMMUNITY SEGMENTS
03:31 to 13:20: Deck Tech (For Literal): From listener Michael, discuss the sleeves, mats, stuff we like to use, stuff we don’t like. Is double sleeving your deck worth it? Do you only get leather deck boxes? Do you adore Dragonshield sleeves? Does your friend’s random naked anime chick play mat irk you to no end? WHY do ultra pros split so easily?
Strategy SEGMENTS
13:48 to 31:06: Mono Colored Deck Building: To Brian, it seems like more and more people feel like they need 2-3 colors to play EDH. I personally absolutely love the flavor of mono colored commanders. I want to talk about:
1) The strengths of mono color (threat levels on board, cheap landbase, powerful commander options)
2) How to play off the weaknesses of each color (HINT: Use artifacts!)
3) Suggested Mono-colored Commanders to try:
- Luis – Kemba, Kha Regent
- William – Yeva, Nature’s Herald
- Brian – Thrun, the Last Troll
- Christian- Chainer, Dementia Master
31:35 to 47:59: Deck Archetype Rundown: I’ve never played with a storm deck before, so I’d like to know more about it. What does it mean when you play a storm deck? What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? What generals tend to be the best at playing this strategy? What are your personal experiences with this?
- Outside of Palinchron, storm can be hard to set up
- Probably going infinite for 20 mins at a time
- DON’T DO IT, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS FUN, DON’T DO IT
TECHNOLOGY SEGMENTS Art by SketchyDoodles
35:52 to 1:16:53: Entourage – Atalya, Samite Master:
Life gain doesn’t matter in EDH, eh? Then Atalya must be the worst bitch to roll with. In all serious, this is a card I’ve never seen before, and I’m quite enamoured with her. Let’s pull our collective minds together and see if we can get this gem to shine!
STRATEGIES:
- Attrition based attack, using Atalya to slow our own death clock
- Life Power! Using the life to pay into super effects that’d be too risk otherwise.
- Effects that trigger when you gain life
Brian’s Picks: Karma (with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth), Glacial Chasm, Righteous Aura (FOG’D BRO), Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker
Christian’s Picks: Cradle of Vitality, Delaying Shield, Inner Sanctum, Enduring Ideal
Luis’s Picks: Black Vise, Iron Maiden, Phyrexian Processor, Angelic Chorus, Eternity Vessel, Endless Horizons (seems good with Goblin Charbelcher
William’s Picks: Ajani’s Pridemate, Serra Avatar, Well of Lost Dreams
1:17:16 to 1:29:33: COMMANDER SHOWDOWN – Azusa, Lost but Seeking VS. Omnath, Locus of Mana
From listener Mike, like the free for all roundtable, and the “under/over” segment, comes a brand new segment of Commandercast, Commander Showdown! Which commander is superior at what they do, and which one is going to be eating dirt after this slam fest? YOU decide!
Azusa: Ramps out quickly, protection against Mass LD due to social stigmas. Doesn’t do anything without lands in hand.
Omnath: Ramps quickly but loses his mana if he gets bumped off the table, HUUUUUGE body.
