I can’t even pretend that this week’s topics have any real relation. There’s just… nothing between them. Normally there’s at least some thin undercurrent between topics but this week, but this week is a dirty grab-bag. Maybe it’s because I had to hit up THE RESERVES after a record-setting flakeout from some guests! I managed to get Byron, Pat and Matthew on short notice to spit fire into the cipher this week and we threw together a pretty good show; Pat wanted to talk Horde, Byron wanted to talk fogs and Matthew agreed to appear with the stipulation we gave him the opportunity to shit on the PDiddy ban. This show was born!

Important: Gifts Given 2012 orders are closed! An invoice is on the way for those who participated in the drive that will detail the next step. After everyone has paid, we’ll be making the shirts and shipping them! Thanks to everyone who placed an order. In a few weeks, the MtG community in the real will be swarming with well-dressed CommanderCast boosters and it’s going to be awesome!

An invasion on the scale of the notorious ’96 nWo explosion onto the WCW scene, this week CommanderCast is invaded by the hooligans of our brother cast, Off-Color Cast! Prepare yourself accordingly! In case you’re not familiar with these three podcasting bros, the ‘c-cubed’ of Calvin, Christian and Cassidy are laying down their own tracks and currently serve as the companion podcast to CommanderCast. Calvin and Cassidy are both grizzled veterans of the harsh Commander blogging scene and Christian is a hardened alumni of THE STREETS. With these three in tow, we delve into the audioscape adventure of EDH for another thrilling week of podcasting.

This week the big news was the banned list update and for once I decide to be topical instead of being a hipster dick and deliberately avoiding the topic, though in fairness it’s still not very interesting. I got a ton of Twitter messages and e-mails where people detailed to me that this ruling has been what will finally push them towards advocating for house rules and abandoning dogmatic adherence to the Rules Committee version of Commander. All I can say is welcome to the awesome team. The RC works hard and does as good a job as I can imagine for a group of volunteers trying to serve a demographic that is by nature elusive and difficult to understand. In light of that, their decisions will never please everyone, but everyone can be happy with a little social work and compromise.

Important: Gifts Given 2012‘s last week for placing orders is upon us. Check out the link for the info on how to fill out an order! If I don’t have it by midnight of October 1st, then you’ll be missing out on a thugnificent piece of clothing and a great opportunity to help THE CHILDREN.

SCIENCE! It’s the greatest thing, but it doesn’t play into Commander much. As a format that only barely sputters along because of the duct tape of good will holding it together instead of a tight-fisted regime’s bean counters keeping the game in check, EDH is probably the most subjective format of all. You can go to any Standard event and have an idea of what you’ll be playing against simply by reading the internet for twenty minutes beforehand. In EDH, despite the lamentation of skinny-jeans hipsters across the Commander community, it’s difficult to make any assumption when you step into a new EDH group. It’s wild cards all around.

Or is it?

This week I am joined by long-time baller Max of Peasant Rebellion fame to discuss the project of our special guest. Joeri is the creator of “The REAL Top 50”, a fascinating analysis of the MTGS EDH deck database where you can see trends in deck construction, the numerical representation of some cards across the format, and so on. Really, it’s the only science I know of that anybody has ever done to EDH, and that makes it super-noteworthy. Also Jeori has an awesome accent so that’s important.

After you’re done the podcast, don’t forget to have my back on this whole Gifts Given 2012 affair. It’s for the children, but even for the selfish bastards out there like myself, you’re getting hooked up with a thugnificent CommanderCast garment. This will be the only time they are ever produced, so if you want in, get in NOW!

This week we went to Shauku’s House for another Entourage segment featuring everyone’s… uh… worst vampire in their collection, Shauku, Endbringer. It was out in the middle of nowhere, not many people were around, and we left feeling worse than ever, but we still did it. Accompanying me for this trip into regret and sorrow were Imshan, Justin and very special guest Dave Lee aka Derfington aka Mr. Durdling Around aka The Grand Imperial Celestial Archduke of Pimpology and Lord of All The Arts. We also did some stuff other than the Shauku thing, so I guess you shouldn’t necessarily just skip to that and then turn off your media player.

It’s week two for placing orders for Gifts Given 2012 shirts, hoodies, and so on. Don’t forget–you’re not just getting clothing, you’re giving to a great cause and even entering yourself in a draw for some Super Secret Mystery Prizes. I guess they’re not that mysterious given you can access a full list of them, but still… things! Plus charity! And garments. A winning team.

This week on CommanderCast we’re joined by a unique guest: Eric, the administrator of the service PucaTrade. Why does this matter? Well, we’ve never had a guest on the show that I can recall who is here because they provide an actual service to the audience. I guess you could argue that CommanderCast itself is a service but whatever. Eric runs his own site with no advertising or any other such gibberish, despite absorbing a (presumably) considerable cost up front for it. This is unto itself is admirable. PucaTrade itself is something that I think is uniquely beneficial to the Commander crowd, because we don’t want to spend a bunch of time pissing around trying to trade for individual cards from Mirage (necessarily). But I’ll recommend you go and check the site out itself, or listen to the show. If you’re not sold after that, well, you never will be.

…regardless of Eric’s service, he’s also an experienced Commander player and was a much-appreciated guest. Also on deck with me for this week’s episode is long-time CommanderCast contributor Brionne, the author of Line in the Sand, and one other…

So, on top of that, it’s also totally important to note that this week marks the beginning of Gifts Given 2012. The means you can start picking up the new, super-duper swag shirts by ordering them from me and picking up an estimate on how much they’re going to cost. Every shirt includes a donation to charity and if you want, you can give extra monies to the charity too. You can even chalk up those donations to selfish ulterior motives, since they get you extra raffle tickets for our Super Secret Mystery Prizes.

As the CommanderCast staff roll grows uncontrollably, I like to try and get everyone on that list to pop onto the show at some point. It gives you an idea of who’s talking to you in articles, videos, or even some perspective on the brother editing your show and such. This week, we have the podcast debut of my man Mightily_Oats aka Mike. Known as an all-around moneymaker, Photoshop boss, and the author of the now-infamous Cooking With Oats series of articles, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Mike’s voice is way better than my own for radio purposes. I’m sure you guys remember that homeless dude everyone was making a big deal out of for his voice. Imagine that, but instead of being homeless he’s a millionaire in a sweet-ass mansion/compound with a golf course held up by helicopters and you’ve got Mike.

I also have William (you know, Mr. Savor That Commander Flavor) providing the voice of the flavour nerds, Sean giving us the alcohol nerd perspective, and myself holding things down for all the nerds with nothing better to do than talk into a microphone and distribute it out there. The four of us internet fist-bump before delving further into the audioscape adventure of CommanderCast to discuss the value of EDH as a hobby, being the influential lame duck in a game, and then some matching pairs of generals and non-Legend cards.
